Only in death do we surrender to life, but the spirit still lives. In “Effigy” I play with the idea of a final resting place for the physical body, but piercing swords and cracked cement reveal there is still a spirit living. In tarot, this card can mean avoidance, praying, or surrender. I wanted to highlight how in black religion/spiritual practices, we often surrender to the idea of death being a homecoming for those whose souls have passed this physical space. Ancestral blood runs through me and you, we carry their spirits through time.
