“The Strangest Fruits: Defiance”

In 1918, in the state of Georgia, Mary Turner publicly called out a white mob for the unjust lynching of her husband. She even went as far as to threaten the mob with legal action. Of course, Mary Turner probably knew denouncing white southern patriarchy would result in her death. The mob made a point to hang Mary Turner upside down and torture her body, so she could feel their hate. Nonetheless, she still defied the status quo and spent her last breath calling out those, who’d probably lynch her next.

Through my art, I am reclaiming this moment in history as the “Strangest Fruit of Defiance” as Mary Turner dare defy white rage, while looking hate in the face.
